Police Systems and Practices

Transcript – Video Lecture 2  "Quality of Life and Fear of Crime"

Hello class, welcome to Week 2.  For our second week of class, we will assess the critical issues correlated with the role and job function of the police officer, to include a look at specific theories and perspectives including the “broken windows” theory and quality of life perspectives that influence policing strategies.

In addition to your chapter 3 and 4 readings, we have a lecture, two videos which discuss community policing, and additional reading on the U.S. Department of Justice Ferguson, Missouri report.

Your assignments this week include the Week Two discussion forum where you will discuss community policing, and a paper which also focuses on the important components of community policing.

In your forum for this week, you will be asked to discuss what is community policing.  In your opinion, how important is citizen involvement in this type of policing, and what local communities do to assist the police.

And for your Week Two paper,  you will be asked to address the following tasks in a 2-3 page essay.  First, define and explain community policing as currently practiced in the U.S.  Second, from your review of the U.S. Department of Justice investigation in the Ferguson, Missouri police department, what do you feel are the main criticisms of the police in Ferguson, and what steps can communities take to make community policing a successful strategy for law enforcement,

Enjoy Week Two!
